Hey guys,

Been running the AF method for about 3 months now and have a few questions.

  1. Running Phosminus and Carbon in a TLF reactor, Carbon keeps rising to the top even after soaking. Is this an issue?
  2. Currently dosing 2 drops a day of Pro Bio S and NP Pro, is this ok or should I swap to Pro Bio F?
  3. Following the AF instructions, Adding 1 drop of Amino and Vitality one day and 1 drop of Build and energy the next, Is this to much or not enough?
  4. I am having to clean the glass every 2 days due to bio film build up on the glass is this normal? its also on the rocks (pic included)
  5. Have a small amount of cyano in some of the lower flow areas of the tank, doesn't seem to be spreading, how should I combat it?
  6. Turbos keep dying, maybe from cyano?

I don't know this method, but that algae on the tank cannot be good; or natural

Hey welcome to R2R.

Let me answer your questions one at a time.

1. Running Phosminus and Carbon in a TLF reactor, Carbon keeps rising to the top even after soaking. Is this an issue?

The carbon will rise up to the top as its very light. You can either tap the reactor to bring them down or you can leave them like that as its causes no issues.

2. Currently dosing 2 drops a day of Pro Bio S and NP Pro, is this ok or should I swap to Pro Bio F?

Its ok and looking at your nutrient levels I will cut their doses down to 1 drop each.

3. Following the AF instructions, Adding 1 drop of Amino and Vitality one day and 1 drop of Build and energy the next, Is this to much or not enough?

You are at low nutrient level but your PO4 level is towards higher side compared to NO3 level. So, I will possibly either drop the PO4 a bit or increase the NO3 to 1ppm. It will also help to balance out the system and getting rid of algae. Also I will dose the amino and vitamin possibly once a week 1 drop each.

4. I am having to clean the glass every 2 days due to bio film build up on the glass is this normal? its also on the rocks (pic included)
The biofilm is possibly due to excess bacteria in the system so lower the doses of NP Pro and Pro bio S will help.

5. Have a small amount of cyano in some of the lower flow areas of the tank, doesn't seem to be spreading, how should I combat it?
Cyano is the most resilient organism in our tanks. The only thing which brings them down is a good balance of nutrients and time.

6.Turbos keep dying, maybe from cyano?
I don't know if cyano can kill turbos. I have turbos in my tank and in past my tank went through cyano but I never saw it killing any of my snails.

Your tank looks fine including all coral colours. So, just try to play with one parameter at a time and wait. Don't do something just for the sake of doing.

Hey @Anirban,

Thanks heaps for the replies, just to clarify on a few points!

Isn't it an issue with the carbon on top? cant get the GFO to tumble without making the carbon move around, Wont that make it break down?

Will increase the nitrates, So change it to Amino, Vitality, Build and Energy once a week?

I will work on increasing the nitrates to help with the Cyano.

Would also love to hear from @Aquaforest & @120reefkeeper on my original questions :D

If you are saying that carbon will break down then the answer is no it will not.
I will drop the Pro bio S and NP pro dosing to half and also the amino and vitamin dosing to once a week.

I will answer each question independently [emoji41]

Running Phosminus and Carbon in a TLF reactor, Carbon keeps rising to the top even after soaking. Is this an issue?

No this is not an issue more than likely the carbon will end up settling down.

Currently dosing 2 drops a day of Pro Bio S and NP Pro, is this ok or should I swap to Pro Bio F?

I would continue to use the Pro bio s/Np Pro. Cut this dosing in half.

Following the AF instructions, Adding 1 drop of Amino and Vitality one day and 1 drop of Build and energy the next, Is this to much or not enough?

I would spread this out a little more so basically cut it in half. I would go every other day with each.

I am having to clean the glass every 2 days due to bio film build up on the glass is this normal? its also on the rocks (pic included)

This will clear up when you cut back on the Pro bio s/Np Pro.

Turbos keep dying, maybe from cyano?

I've never seen any type of snails die from cyano.

I've seen people have cyano issues when the P04/ No3 relationship is not balanced out. I would continue to knock the phosphate down. You could also dose a little NO3 to balance as previously stated.

Here is a great article that covers this topic.
