Quick Ammonia in QT

I would say that the problem is on how many times you feed them. In my 30g QT I have 3 african lyretail, 3 sailfin anthias, and 5 sunset anthias and only feed every otherday. They are healthy. Oh a pair of sunburst anthias too

Thank you!

That's interesting. Everything I've read says they need multiple feeds per day. Can I add another Anthias down the road or will that create issues?

I don't see why not. Acclimate them carefully. Anthias seems to stress out easily snd they cdn die with too much stress. Give them something to hide from also

Quarantining doesn't necessarily mean medicate its used to observe the fish for signs of disease and to make sure of its health and that it is eating good if no disease shows in a few weeks to a couple of months should be good to go

True, but I wouldn't add any fish to a display without treating it as if it carried ich, velvet, and flukes. (Cupramine and prazi are a must). This because many fish won't show symptoms but will infect the rest upon introduction.

Reputable fish suppliers so far I have good luck with live aquaria and blue zoo aquatics

Blue zoo aquatics doesn't stand by their fish well, you'll never get a refund no matter how dissatisfied you are (if they send you the smallest fish possible even smaller than you ordered and potentially even the wrong fish, or it died the first day despite good husbandry). They will accuse you of not knowing what you're doing, bad mouth the competitors when you call them asking for a refund, and make up all sorts of bs. I will never buy from them again. I told them that, they don't care. Very unprofessional, overpriced, poor customer service, and from what I have seen- subpar livestock.

Live aquaria, Petsolutions, divers den, pieces of the ocean (on this forum), aquatica corals, are all great sources.

Another to avoid is petco, IMO.

I have bought About 100 fish online in the last 12 months, I have a lot of recent experience with many online vendors.

I thought you couldn't keep different Anthias species together?

I never knew that. They all seems fine. As long as there's only one male on each specie. Like on my lyretail there's 1 male and 2 females, on my sunset 1 male and four females

New problem: The larger Anthias is picking on the smaller, and I'm worried it will kill it. It's obviously stressed hanging out at the very top. There's places to hide, but it's not utilizing them. Sump it? Try to get it back in QT with another Anthias friend? Would that create exactly the same issue in QT? Leave them be to work it out? I'm at a loss on this one...

In my limited experience, Anthias don't often hide unless they're going to die in a few hours or so. They love to be out in the open (one of the appeals to keeping them).

If you are very concerned, you may remove the smaller anthias and quarantine it, nurse it back to health and re-home it. If you wish to keep more anthias in the future you could A) Remove the aggressor and hope the new "boss" is more docile, or B) add several anthias at the same time that are closer in size.

I am by no means an anthias expert, but that's my .02

I'm just not sure what is "establishing dominance" versus what is killing the other, if that makes sense? The first 2 days they hid, but now are out in the open (which is what I got them for, to add movement and color). I probably just need to chill and let them do their thing? The larger wasn't this aggressive when there were 3, but was still the boss for sure.

If it doesn't appear like it's weakening the other fish, I wouldn't worry too much. Look at the tangs in my avatar--- I have learned what aggression will go away, what is permanent, etc. LOL!

Hm. Looks stressed, but not weak.
I'm ready to be stocked and done. This is all too stressful for me! Lol

Yeah I hear you - I had my QT all set up for the fish I will release in to one of my DT after the fallow period ended - My Achilles tang refused to play nice with many additions, even stressed my regal angel to the point that she again, stopped eating.

I had to buy another one...

I was going to sell the old one, but he is so beautiful, and my aggressive large angel tank is full of fish that won't tolerate his crap. So... expensive and irritating... that's for sure. I am happy with where it is now, hopefully everyone pulls through. Murphys law says otherwise, however..
