Anybody ever cycled a tank and when testing watched the ammonia spike and go downcand the nitrites never go up? So ive been testing my water every 2 to 3 days. Used a shrimp to rot and get ammoina in my tank. I watched my ammonia levels spike and go down but now everything is sitting pretty much at zero. Im using a API test kit. As far as I can see the ammonia says zero so do nitrites and nitrates. In the 2 or 3 days inbetween testing did I miss the nitrite spike? Is my tank cycled now. I never had this happen before. Its like the ammonia spiked and went down and nothing else happened lol.

Yes I routinely bump

In your cycle did you add bottle bac

How long ago did you add the shrimp?

I didnt add any additives, I left the shrimp in for about 2 weeks. Probably to long it was all goopy when I pulled the shrimp out lol, I put the shrimp in to start the cycle on January 6th.

I bet your tank is cycled but I don’t know why you didn’t see nitrites. Did you have any live rock or live sand? Was all the rock not live?

No all dry rock from brs, and I did bare bottom this time. I have a bit of a diatom bloom right now like normal. Thats what is also making me think its cycled or close to it. I feel like maybe I should wait like 2 more weeks before adding a fish just to be on the safe side. What do you guys think

You are gonna hate my answer, but I would add a couple fish in about 6 weeks after you do this:

Lol I know, I actually have another tank, im transferring my fish to this bigger tank. This is why im more concerned, I have kinda a bit of attachment to these fish ive had for about 3 years lol. Would you still quarantine fish you already own?

How big is your water volume?
I would say that you went through a small cycle and the results were not drastic enough to be read.
Do a test and add some ammonia to the tank.
Test 20 min after the dose. Test in two days if the ammonia is gone you should see some nitrates.

You know the condition of the fish, so if they are healthy then no need for quarantine.

Good question. I probably would not, unless I suspected a disease that was dormant or not showing for some reason. For example I’ve heard that ich can seem to disappear, then re-appear when the tank is stressed. Good luck.

I may be all wet here and I will be criticized badly.
I have read that the ammonia shoud get up to 2.0.
This high amount will be easier to test and track with your test kits.

Ok i might get a little bottle of ammonia and see what happens. Man this is my 4th reef tank and never had this happen before lol
