Sorry, if there is already a thread for this or if its already answered somewhere else but I need some help identifying these two things in my tank please.

We have these brown/gray-ish pellet like things just lying on the substrate. They're to big to be any fish excrement, I'm thinking maybe its from our blood shrimp but otherwise I have no clue.

And then we have these little orange-ish blobs on the live rock but its only isolated to this piece of rock and I believe it doesn't get direct sunlight if thats relevant at all. Me and my dad scrubbed at a section and it came off relatively easy and hasn't grown back

Any feedback would be appreciated and I will be active waiting for any additional questions or answers, and again sorry if there is already a thread but me and my dad are kind of worried.

Welcome to REEF2REEF! Hey, no question can be asked too many times. Don’t hesitate to ask. I still ask stupid questions all the time.

I’ve seen this posted before and it being identified as snail poop. Don’t quote me on that. But do you have snails? :p

Hello and welcome to R2R!

I believe we are looking at diatoms and / or dinoflagellates.

Welcome to the REEF!! Looking at the pictures it seems that you could just siphon all of that out of the system. How long has your system been up? Have you added any new flow to the system? Im just wondering if it is something that may have been in the rocks and finally worked its way out. The orange may be a sponge or algae. The brown on the sand bed is diatoms for sure.I would siphon it all out and see if it returns by chance.

No I don't but we do have two hermits

No, the rocks have been in the tank since set-up and no new flow has been added. Me and my dad are planning to go down to the lfs and see what they recommend to clean it up but we would rather it not appear anymore. We know about the sand as diatoms but I was more concerned about the big pellets in the first photo. Are the orange things cause for concern or can we ignore them for now?

Yeah, me and my dad concluded that to. He has been looking up tutorials to clean them up and we might get some bottom feeders to try and manage it. I seem to remember someone mention on the passing that snails can help. But I digress, I'm worried about the brown/gray pellet things as there is a significant amount of them and I don't want a sudden spike in ammonia to kill off our hippo tang and anemone.

Siphon it out so that it does not get disturbed and that will help a lot.

Or are the blobs diatoms as well? If so, do we need to worry or do we just get rid of them and move on?

Could be hermit poop. Looks like poopy pellets right? I agree the brown is diatoms. Assuming your tank is less than 3 months old? If so, it’s normal and goes away on its own if using RODI water. Don’t freak out over diatoms and nuke your tank to rid of them. They go away naturally and are practically harmless.

Yeah, our seller says he has some purified and treated water which we can buy by the gallon to do top ups and water changes with. I told him we should get a small RODI rig but its too much money right now. If the blobs are excrement then they must be from the shrimp as the crabs are one of the newest editions and these were present before them. I can't recall exactly when they appeared but I have a sneaking suspicion it may have happened after the shrimp but I can't remember. And yes the tank is only two months old, if I recall correctly.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed, this was very helpful. I think all my concerns have been cleared up so I will try to close this thread(if thats possible lol). Many thanks

No need to close the thread. Glad you feel helped!

That’s why we are all here[emoji2]

Welcome to r2r ! The orange blobs are sponges...harmless...and i think the pellets are poo from your yellow tang...also harmless.
