Hey everyone, my baby blue hippo tang is showing early signs of possible ich. She is starting to rub her self up against the rock work. I currently have a 10 gallon aquarium with a HOB filter and a piece of PVC in my storage locker. I was thinking of setting it up tonight with water from the display tank and hopefully transferring the affected fish into it.

Questions:

- Is this a safe method?
- Do I need to wait for a cycle given the bacteria in the DT water?
- Should I slowly reduce the salinity?
- What type of medication should I use?
- Carbon or no carbon?
- How frequent water changes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Is this a safe method? I think this would be a save method. Just make sure the temperture is good, the fish can't escape and a hiding place.
- Do I need to wait for a cycle given the bacteria in the DT water? I dont know what you mean with DT water :). Thats probably cause im dutch lol.
- Should I slowly reduce the salinity? You could but since your putting it in quartentaine you can just use medication
- What type of medication should I use? Can't help you there, no clue what is available or recommended in the states. Over here people often use garlic
- Carbon or no carbon? Probably not if your going to use medicine
- How frequent water changes? I would change a bit daily if it's not too much of a hassle. But I think with the filter the fish should also be fine for a few days.

Also note that ich can house in the substrate of your tank. I would definetly recommand feeding your fish some garlic enriched foods.

Hope it helps a bit.

Thanks Maarten for the feedback. By the way, DT is short for display tank! Anyone had success with certain medication?

Wouldnt your display tank water contain the ich you're trying to get rid of? I never use anyting from my DT in my quarantine tank. To me that's just transfereing the issue over, or at least there is a chance of it...

I would add seachem stability as well. Dose per instructions. Having done this for a while now and haven't lost a fish in QT when using it yet.

If your hippo tang has ich, then ich is now present in your entire DT. You need to QT/treat ALL your fish and then go fallow in the DT for 72 days. Otherwise, the hippo will just keep getting reinfected everytime you put her back into the DT.

Your water changes will probably be frequent as there will not be bacteria built up to deal with the fish waste, once you start up the QT/HT you need to dose some bacteria as the water is not a sufficient source for bacteria, they colonize on surfaces. If you use a medication like copper that will wipe out your bacteria and you will need to do daily water changes to keep the ammonia in check. You can't use carbon while using a medication because it will take the medication out of the water. If you do hyposalinity, yes you need to lower it very slowly.
I hope this helps a bit- https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/eq...arantine-tank-how-quarantine-fish;-guide.html

+1

Thanks everyone for the input. About to start dosing with prazipro as I'm almost positive the tang has flukes (head shaking, no white spots). Also planning a fresh water dip. Keep you posted
