Hey guys, I'm new to this and was wondering how this overflow works? I believe the first chamber with the whole in the bottom is so you can attach a bulkhead and then put in a durso standpipe for the water to drain down quietly? Is that correct? But what is the second chamber for? It's just an open rectangle all the way through? What does it do? How does the water return? What would you guys do? Thank in advice this will help me a lot!

I think we'll need a better picture and a lot more information. There's not much to go on by the picture. Is the overflow in the tank or outside? How big is it and what size tank is it on? Is the tank drilled?

at first I thought there were 4 holes, but that's just the reflection isn't it? I agree with Harold... more info is needed.
My second thought (after the reflection confusion) was that one hole is for the drain pipe and the other is for the return.... though I don't see a hole in the side for the return to stick through. hmm.. that space in the back is weird. Again... more info needed on what kind of tank that is ect ect

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg The tank is a 240 gallon truvu the guy I bought it from grilled 7 holes in the top for the overflow but I don't want to use those. I would like to just use the corner overflows. The overflow is built in, and there's only one whole at the bottom then behind that it's a rectangle all the way through! Is that for the return? Here's some better pics thanks for the help!

If that back compartment goes all the way through, then it's to facilitate passing wires or plumbing from the bottom to the top of the tank - return plumbing, lighting cables, etc. Basically it allows the tank to be flush against the wall, I think.

Still not clear from the pictures. Does the rear rectangle have anyplace where water can go in or out or is it just a dry chase to allow cords to access the stand? I see all the holes in the bottom of the overflow yet you said there's only one hole through the bottom of the tank? What size are the holes in the overflow and tank bottom?

It's just an open rectangle all the way through?
That was designed as a return (PVC) pass-through, that tanks also looks like it was setup for a closed loop system from all the holes drilled into the top.

That makes sense guys! Thank you! I guess I will use it as a return and for the cables! I was actually hoping to be able to put it pretty close to flush on the wall so that works out good! But how would you guys design the overflow? Thanks!

You could get by with two holes, so you have more than needed. The new standard of a herbie drain with one return line would work well.
