My son is wanting his own saltwater tank
Q- is a standard 20G (25x17x13) with 6g sump (vol 4ish) big enough for a Valentini puffer & Clown (FOWLR)

he has had a freshwater tank for last well over a yr -- and has done well with it...
it is a 20T & cabinet - so am I concerned for nothing?

I frequently see peeps doing crazy stock in a 15g -but I don't want to have the "rehoming" in 2y.

not totally off subject:
but are there any CUC we could have with a Valentini?

hi,i don't see a prob with this ;) trochus snails prob best bet on cuc:)

It could work, just remember that a puffer = no clams/shrimp/yummy things.

I recommend looking into buying some decorative macro to help with managing nitrates/phosphates within the tank. I also recommend getting a fairly large skimmer. Puffers make a lot of waste.

For CUC, it's a coin toss. I recommend that you buy CUC, and keep some CUC in quarantine/reserve for if the puffer noms its way through everything. My valentini loved munching on hermit crabs and would go after snails as well. It's a pretty good way to provide enrichment for the fish, but you just have to remember to quarantine the CUC.

I have never kept a puffer but have researched them a fair bit. Don't they go after things with shells, or have to be given things with shell, to keep their teeth trimmed? Kind of like a parrot needing their bill trimmed? I haven't quite been able to pinpoint whether they deliberately go after shelled creatures for this reason or whether people feed them shelled creatures for this purpose specifically. I guess if it's the former then you might lose a lot of shelled CUC. If it's the latter you'll probably be fine with shellies.

I'm following this to see what more folks have to say because I love puffers.
