Searched for the answer, but couldnt find it. I will be using LEDs over my 120g tank. Most likely cheaper CBBs or SB Reef/Reefbreaders if I can find good deal on used unit.

I have 2 T5 fixtures from previous tank I had setup years ago, and got the idea of adding them in with LEDs, however I am not sure if it makes sense due to dimensions. Tank is standard 4x2x2, while T5 fixtures are only 3 feet long. I guess I could put them in the middle, and have a gap of 6 inches on each side, but not sure if that is good idea.

Any suggestions, should I try this, will it do more bad than good? Thanks for the help.

Well,
When I ran led/t5:

The T5's were close to the front and back glass / with the leds in the middle.

That way the t5's help the front to back (led) light coverage.

Either way you go, wish you all the best.

Mine are like this too. I saw this is how WWC had their tanks in the store too

Perfectly fine to use a 3 foot fixture on 4 foot length tank. You will still get full coverage from the T5s but lower par on each edge. Run one T5 unit towards front glass and one unit closer to the back glass and place your LED units in the middle of the T5s. I also prefer higher mounting heights to get more spread, reduce LED hot spots, and reduce salt splatter / spray from getting on the lights, but you obviously need to mount them in such a way to be sure you're getting the par you desire.

Run 'em. 36" is not ideal, but better than nothing. Maybe keep your eye out for some 48" used units over the next year.
