Quick question on Hanna Alk Checker

On step 2, when putting 1ml of solution into the vial, do you put the syringe tip on before pulling in 1ml? Wouldn't that actually increase your volume to be > 1ml? Or is the syringe designed to work with it so that you have 1ml only if you use the syringe tip...

Its designed that way assuming you're doing it correctly

Put the syringe tip on before pulling in 1 ml. If you start with the plunger pushed in all the way to the 1.0 mark, and then pull it up to the 0.0 mark, it's going to suck in exactly 1 ml of reagent. All of that reagent will be in the tip, you'll only see air in the body of the syringe itself. That way you only have to rinse the tip when you are done and avoid getting the syringe itself dirty. You could also do it without using the syringe tip, it's the same amount of reagent assuming you always start the plunger at 1.0 and end at 0.0.
