So my tank has been up and running, with coral for a few months now and has been doing great. (To elaborate the tank is about 10 years old but I just recently added coral) however, my tank is positioned right next to a window and gets a lot of natural light throughout the day even when the tank lights are off. Basically what I want to know is other than potential algae blooms, does natural light have any negative affects on the corals themselves. Like for example, is it bad for the coral to stay open for almost 12 hours a day. Thanks

Hello,
I don’t see any problem at all. Actually more a plus...
My only initial concern would be linked to tank temperature... but seems not to be case.

As you mention it can cause algae issues, but otherwise i think it is fine assuming your lighting period overlaps. In other words if it is natural light from 8 to 8 i dont think you want to keep your lights on until 2am giving it 18 hours.

Other possible issue is heat depending how bright that sunlight is could heat up the aquarium a lot.

If it isn't broke don't fix it.
