can i leave the top (cap) off my ghost protein skimmer? it seems when i do so the pH will climb to 8.2 rather than 8.0, i don't have much surface agitation as the only flow is the return pump with a spinstream nozzle

also i can only get my mixed water to 8.0 is it normal to have to adjust ph to freshly mixed water? i could try an airstone as my cheap powerhead pointed at the surface doesnt seem to do the trick

I would say try an airstone and see how that helps. I never had much surface agitation either as I used to only buy cheap powerheads until I bought a BIG powerhead. Now I get a load of surface agitation and I think it helps tremendously. I also don't know much about the ghost protein skimmers but I am sure someone will be along soon who knows about them. Check your local area for any sales on powerheads, often if people leave the hobby they sell them for cheap.
