I noticed my Monti and Acan didn't look so great a few weeks ago. I'll admit I was lacking in my regular testing. Nitrate and Phos were a little high, mag was off, and cal was low. So instead of doing massive water changes and shocking the system I brained stormed while looking around my basement.

Long story short I took one of my 30 gallon brutes, installed an overflow, mixed some water, waited a day, and set up a drip line into the brute and had it overflow into the sump. 2 weeks later and 2 brutes all good, even better. Even the algae died off.

Just thought I'd share.

Congrats! Sounds like the handyman's automatic water change system.

I imagine you can do water changes to the brute, and keep this concept going.

Also, I can image an improvement to the system so the old and new water do not mix in the brute. You could have the DT overflow go into a plastic bag, as it fills it will still displace the NSW in the brute without mixing with it.
