I have an acrylic 48x48x30 in my office. It has a corner overflow, and the previous owner drilled a 2 inch hole right in the side. I have a 2 inch elbow with a Dursa pipe made from regular PVC in the overflow, and a reducer to 1.5 inch flexible hose that goes to my basement.
For the first time in more than 2 years since I started working from home due to COVD, I am finally moving my office work out of my dining room and actually into my office. This makes me aware of how loud the tank is. The basement has a 2x3/4 inch Herbie drain from a frag tank, and it is whisper quiet. I am not certain I want to make that quiet, as the sound of falling water is preferable to the hum from a randomly set mp40.
I am tempted to drill the bottom of the overflow box, add a 3/4 inch bulk head and run a 2nd flex line to the basement. This would take at least 2 days of work, possibly more if things go wrong. I do not want to upgrade the tank or move it while I am in this house (which might not be long). I am hoping for some 'easier' ideas.
1) Can I drill the 2nd hole for a Herbie, but connect both to the same drain line with a T-fitting before it goes to the basement? This saves more than half the work.
2) I could cut a lot of noise just by raising the water level in the overflow. This would involve replacing the premade PVC with something closer to the size of my overflow. Does anyone make fittings just for stand pipes?
3) Not directly related to the sound, but can I 'uncut' a 2 inch hole in an acrylic tank? I am tempted to turn off the main pump for a few days, Acrylic-glue a small panel over the hole, and cut 2 or 3 new drains out the bottom. This would be a huge disaster if it leaks but I can't remove the panel. I am not willing to completely drain the tank, but the overflow should be relatively dry with the main pump off.
