Has anyone done the upgrade for their MP40's? I got mine in today. Took about 5 minutes a driver to install. I can't believe the noise reduction. Well worth the $75 each.

Heads up, you will have to delete your PH and add back if you use Reef Link.

Now the $64 question....how in the world does changing the driver result in such drastic noise reduction? Is the PH producing any less flow with the QD driver?

Oh you mean upgrade? I was thinking there was some sort of update to my MP40QD's.

I never owned any MP's before, but a friend tells me mine are super quiet.

It is supposedly producing a little more flow, if you upgrade the driver AND the wetside. As for how noise reduction is accomplished, I really don't know. Maybe just some kind of modulation in the current provided to the dry side. A smoother waveform?

It was explained in a video when they first came out that I can't find. From what I remember it was said that it's the way the magnet is spun. It was compared to pushing a merry-go-round, when pushed there is a lot of energy being put on things making noise, so instead of one "big push" with a lot of energy it is a lot of small pushes (probably in the fractions of seconds) which in a way disperses the energy reducing noise. Hope that makes some kind of sense. I'll keep looking for the video. But the QD are near silent. Thinking of upgrading my mp10's soon.

Thanks kschweer! That makes perfect sense. I do plan to change my wet sides (especially since you can't get replacement parts for them anyway). Will I get the increase in flow with that upgrade or do you have to change the dry side to get the increased performance? That detail wasn't clear to me on the video.

I'm pretty sure that with the driver upgrade and new wet side you will get the increased flow. Maybe @RandoReefer has a little more input

I think the Ecotech President is funny.

LOL, I think he looks way too young to be running the company! :D

Thanks kschweer. The wet sides will be on next months tank budget.

Well now I'm going to have to upgrade my MP10's too. I have two of them on the back wall of my tank. I thought they were silent, and they were compared to my MP40's. This morning when the Nutrient Transport mode kicked in at 85% I can suddenly hear the MP10's.

Thanks @kschweer for finding that video. It's still one of the best explanations for the QD technology.

As far as increased flow is concerned, when speaking of upgrading, that is only accomplished by "upgrading" dry side, wet side, and driver. (Essentially, purchasing a new QD.) Check out page 10-11 on brochure link below for "upgrade" comparisons.

In my personal opinion/experience, I was more than happy to only upgrade the drivers to my MP40s. The noise reduction alone was justifiable enough to buy new drivers, especially considering I was already happy with the MP40 flow output.

Congrats on coming over to the "quiet" side! [emoji23][emoji4]
