Quiet Protein Skimmer?

Homer, DC pumps do not hum like AC, not sure why people eggagerate this claim of silent. I own two Sicce pumps and neither is dead silent, bullet proof but not silent. Besides, Redsea skimmers use a Sicce engine.

If we listened to all the negatives types in forums etc, none of us would buy any product let alone Nyos. Your opinion is your entitlement but I prefer to listen to people who have had their hands on the product.

No pump is silent, but a DC driven Dulua or even a Reef Octopus is going to be the quietest, they get my vote. I have said my piece, I will OP decide now.

I have the Red Sea 300 skimmer and it’s the quietest after skimmer I’ve used.

Before you go out and purchase another skimmer use some techniques to quiet your skimmer.

Make sure it’s not touching the sides. Put it on a oxo silicone drying mat, a lot of times it’s the vibration from touching the sump and stand that makes the noise.

Compared to my Bubble King mini 160 - the Red Sea RSK 300 is so quiet

I also have the red sea rsk 300 and my brother who sleeps next door can't sleep because it is so loud. You can even hear the skimmer in the living room downstairs (quiet but still...)
Do you have trick of how i can silence it?
I already received a replacement pump from Red Sea but it's still loud. If i lift it slightly up (so that i can rule out the vibration) its still as loud as before... I really don't know what to do now...
Hope to hear from you

Bubble King would be my first choice. All you can hear is just the noise of the foam breaking in the neck of the cup.
Tunze is super quite as mentioned above.
Nyos is pretty quite too compared to others I have seen but has a little hum to it.

Have a vertex omega 150 with ac sicce pump. Was loudest noise in the sump.
Bought a reef octo 150 elite with varios dc pump. Silent and adjustable.
Dc pumps are here to stay. 24dc much safer in the tank than 120 or 220ac.

I sold my Red Sea skimmer and bought the Reef octopus 150 int. It is dead quite, can barely even hear it when I have my head in the cabinet. Very happy with the buy and the auto shutoff in case of an over flow is great too. Not mention the scum it pulls out.

Alright thank you, i might buy a nyos quantum 120 since ive heard a lot of good about them and they are easier to get in where i live

Old thread I’m looking at, thought I would reply.
The bubble king uses an AC pump? And there is still no pump noise?
I bought a NYOS 160 based on the silent claim and it is quiet but not silent. The loudest equipment in my setup is the skimmer. Using vectra M2 return pump which is almost silent.
I might just buy a bubble king mini 160 if they are actually silent even with a AC pump. Any thoughts?

My Maxspect Aeraqua DUO AD600 is almost dead silent.. Im sure the smaller brother Maxspect jump skimmer is just a quiet.

Go for the octo essence 130. Can’t hear it at all!
Mine was clearly audible. The loudest thing on my tank. I thought it was my return pump for a while until I shut the return off for maintenance. So much so I scrapped it for a DC skimmer. I don't recommend it but different strokes for different folks.

DC is your best bet for silence. You'll be hard pressed to find an AC pump that's quieter.
I agree, I went with the octo 150 regal, it has a dc pump. What a huge difference in sound compared to the AC Red Sea skimmer. It is extremely quiet!

I have 2 Tunze 9410 skimmers.
Dc on my 120.
Ac on my 45 frag.
Dc quiet.
Ac not so quiet.
I bought the ac version used and am glad the frag tank is in the snake room and not the living room.

Reef Octo
IceCap

Bubble magus elite line. Dead silent Sicce pump, and it's AC. Don't fall into the trap of DC motors. It's the current fad. A skimmer is not something you'll be needing to turn the pump up and down. They are pretty much set and forget.

While I shop at BRS and they put out great video's, keep in mind they are doing videos to sell you stuff. I always take their recommendations with a grain of salt. I will look for real world reviews from people who actually use the product, not from people who are trying to sell me stuff(think of BRS like QVC, their basically the equivalent of the reefing infomercial.

Not sold on the NYOS skimmers. Most reviews I read on it basically say it's loud, and doesn't work very well, but they are pretty. Just have a look through the for sale forum, loaded with NYOS skimmers.
Sorry mate but I have to fully disagree with you here, anyone who says Sicce pump is silent or quiet is deaf in my opinion, if anyone doesn't believe me go out buy one of these pumps plug it in and tell me it's "quiet"

DC motors are WAY quieter then AC this is just a fact.

for OP definitely go with a DC skimmer you won't regret it!

Agree 1000%!!! It blows my mind when people say skimmers with Sicce pumps or AC pumps in general are "dead silent" as it is just wrong. Will they wake a sleeping baby? No. But there is a very noticeable sound that emanates from AC skimmers, in particular Sicce. I've run both Buble Magus and Aquamaxx skimmers and both had an audible buzz/hum. I'm sure Red Sea and Nyos are no different.

You want silence, go with a DC skimmer. There's really no comparison when it comes to sound.

Also have a vertex omega 150 and that’s why I’m looking for this thread. Not a bad skimmer but certainly makes noise. When I shut it off, my head feels more relaxed.
Interestingly, I never see a thread for quiet calcium reactors!! My Geo is louder than my skimmer.
