I've head DC pumps are really quiet, but also that they put out a high pitched whine.
I would attribute the whine to the controller.
What is your experience.

I use a DC pump with a controller and it is very quite.

Eheim 1262 and bubble magus skimmer pump both AC pumps and 100% dead silent. Zero hum. Tunze powerheads are D.C. Also dead silent. Jebao WP series powerheads D.C. And a very noticeable audible hum. From the pump motors themselves. Old style ecotech mp 40 D.C. Pump and loud enough to wake the dead. Mag 5 and sicce syncra 3.0 AC pumps and both loud as a lawnmower. That's my experience. Seems to just depend on the pump. Price doesn't appear to have much correlation with noise in this instance

Depends on the pump. Newer generations of AC pumps are remarkably quiet too.

How can something be really quiet and produce a high pitched whine at the same time.

I have received my first DC pump today, and according to the description on the website it should be "ultra quiet".
Oh man what a joke. It has a very annoying whine. Don't know if it needs breaking in but if it stays this way it's getting back.

Im running 2 different jebao DC pumps (one for return and one for UV) and they’re both silent.
Received the Jebao dcs1200 return pump today and it produces a high pitched whine. On max power i can hear the whine through the whole house. It's ridiculous.

Thats crazy. I have the 12000 and the 2000 but also they’re both only ran at 40%. Return only runs at 100% when I’m doing a deep clean and I’ve never noticed a whine but that could be because my sump is loud when I’m running it that high.

I can’t speak for DC return pumps. But lots of What I call brushless DC motors have a whine usually at low speeds. Cordless drills, some hvac compressor motors etc. some times the speed controller can make a whine also. I have experienced this with RC cars.

Yeah, my (nano)tank is dead silent other then the fan of my led light and the return pump, explains a lot.

Before i bought my led light all the owners/reviewers claimed it's dead silent, so i bought it and it turned out to be not so silent as they all claimed. I can hear it clearly through the whole room when it's quiet in the house.

I think silent is a relative term. I didn’t realize how loud my last tank was until
I tore it down for the house remodel.

With that said if it says silent my expectations is with everything running on tank I should not here the return pump with doors closed at all.

I run a DSC-7000 and a DCP-18000, both produce a whine after 70% power, before that they are silent.

Sound of the Jebao dcs1200 in the rear chamber of a nano tank.
Harold,
I just picked up the same return pump and it does the same whining sound. Did it ever improve? I've been running mine for 3 weeks now @90% and no improvement in the sound.

No, it didn't improve. I ditched it and bought the Aqua Medic DC Runner 1.3 which is DEAD SILENT.
