Upgrading my 47 gallon column to a 90 gallon that will be in my bedroom, initial head pressure height looks to be around 7-8ft, the tank is a marineland 90 gallon pre drilled corner flow and I plan on running the Herbie overflow method on it with a Aqueon ProFlex 3 Sump. My question is what is the quietest pump I can run on it for a return? It looks as though the Syncra Silent 4.0 will turn the water about 7 times per hour at that head height and from what I read it is silent. Let alone the tank is 18 feet away from my bed but still looking to keep the noise down. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!!

Also any other input on sumps and skimmers (under 20" high) would be highly appreciated I'm learning so I'm well open to ideas!

The Syncra 4 silent is not silent, but quiet and a great pump from my experience. However, I switched to a Jebao DCT 6000. Not only is it quiet and controllable, but you can buy a backup at the same time for less than the Syncra. My Jebao has a high pitched whine that is covered by minor water movement. I like the Bubble Magus Curve 5 that I have, just make sure it is in about 6-7" of water with a stand and it will still be under 20", You may have to move the stand out of the way to empty the cub, but 20" is pretty tight.

Ok, thanks for the info, the stand I'm building myself its actually 25.25" from the base of the floor of the stand to the bottom of the tank, I figured if I could find a skimmer under 20" it would allow for room if I needed to remove it and easy access to empty the cup...

Oh no problem with the Bubble Magus Curve 5 on a stand. You will even to easily be able to take it out for cleaning. Not positive, but that may just be enough for a 7, but it will be a bit tighter.

I also, am not sure of your budget, but I am giving you answers based upon a limited, but I feel minimum needs. If you want to pay more for options, it is up to you. I do not use a controller, but automate things as much as possible.

are you referring to using the skimmer external of the sump? I was going to run it in the sump in a berlin setup the tank will have over 100lbs of live rock and 100lbs of live sand.......I don't mind spending 300 on a skimmer but if that one works great and fits my space requirement then im always happy to save $$.......as for automation I have that part covered the whole house is automated we just built it, I'm an EE by day lol Any other suggestions? it seems to me the proflex 3 sump is the nicest average cost thing to use for a sump

I like the TRIGGER SYSTEMS CRYSTAL 30 SUMP, but hey I built mine with a 30 gallon tank. I mean running the skimmer in the sump, but having room to remove the collection cup.

I was looking at the trigger too the trigger 30 is about the same price as the proflex and the trigger 36 is actually cheaper than the profelx 4, I have the width on the stand just not the height.....decisions decisions lol

Is this a basement sump, or why the 8 feet of head pressure?? Sounds like you're heading for overkill....a much smaller pump should do it for a tank this size unless you have something strange going on plumbing-wise.

Check out the Tunze 9410 or AquaC EV-120 for a skimmer. I still have them both and would buy either again in a heartbeat.

Can you post details of your plumbing plan?

How many feet, vertical?

How many feet, total?

How many elbows?

What size plumbing?

Also, I do like the pumps you are looking at. Sicce also has a Pro line that they claim is even more quiet though, so check them out too. (Looks like the Quiet One line of pumps which Sicce used to make....and I can attest they were definitely silent. I imagine the new Chinese-made Quiet One's are silent too, but I'd wonder about build quality.)

5 feet vertical, 8 feet total 3 elbows, all at 1" SCHED 40

After some more research I went with a variable controller DC motor for the noise, adjustability and the lower power consumption my final list wound up being the trigger systems 30 crystal, the varios 6 pump and a skimz skimmer

Great choices! I would have a Varios if I had the money. The 6? What size drain? You can always ball valve the return if the lowest setting is too much.
