What is the absolute quietest skimmer suitable for a Red Sea Reefer 170? Bonus points for it not being outrageously expensive. Thanks!

Hello,

I was going to say my nyos is super quiet, but they are kinda pricey. Reef octopus have a good name, not sure abou noise level, @Peace River has them and likes them I believe

Welcome to R2R! Although this thread is a little bit older, you may find so helpful input here:

As mentioned I am currently running three Reef Octopus skimmers on different systems and am very happy with their performance, but I think that you will find that most skimmers with DC pumps are very quiet.

I have Deltec 600xi on my Red Sea 170 which has a DC pump with control and I would have to open the cabinet door to verify it is on and working as it is that quiet.

I have a WaterBox 40.1 and it has a small area of 7.25" square for a skimmer so it was hard to find one that had a small footprint, not undersized and quiet. I ended up choosing the Skimz SN127 which fits all the requirements but BRS site says the model is discontinued now.

I have an RS 170. In searching for a skimmer, I found the hardest part to be getting the size right, with the right water level requirements etc.

I went with the aquamaxx in sump skimmer. It has a sicce pump, which is what I also use fory return and it's very quiet. I can usually tell if it's running with the stand door closed, but only due to the noise of the bubbles etc.

Whatever you do, double check dimensions and water height requirements before buying.

Nyos 120 maybe the Simplicity DC 120 as well.

I bought a new Simplicity DC240 for my 180g and found it quite noisy with the air intake. I ended up replacing it with a used Skimz SM201 because of the experience I had with the smaller SN127, did not regret it at all. Very quiet compared to the Simplicity skimmer.

The best combination of budget friendly and low noise goes to Aquamaxx with their modified Sicce pumps. I'm also currently using the Simplicity DC240. It skims great but definitely has a gurgle to it compared to the Aquamaxx. I had an early version of Skimz, and it was very quiet too, but the pumps they were using back then were not very reliable. I assume they have fixed that by now.

Nyos 120 maybe the Simplicity DC 120 as well.
I second that. I have a Nyos 120 and it is silent. Love the skimmer, when people say they are silent, they really mean it. I can hear the humm of my power heads over the skimmer, that is how silent they are.
