A month ago I bought a quoyi parrotfish. Was eating great, no aggresion, fit right into the community in my 180 gallon mixed reef. Picked at the rocks all day. Found it dead on the sand out of nowhere yesterday, was literally fine and eating the day before. Has anyone else had this experience with this fish? From looking around, it seems that these dont do well long term and im not alone with my experience

Yup, very tricky fish. Not many make it long term. I’ve had three, none made it much past six months. IMO, they are not aggressive feeders and don’t get enough to eat. Best avoided.

Are other parrots easier to keep? For example, princess parrots

All expert only in my view. Princess not reef tank compatible .... gets too large and eats your aquascape.

Did you treat for parasites. In my experience, they can last long term if properly QT. I had one for about 2 years, but lost it when I had an accident keeping fish in several tanks while my DT had to go fallow. Currently have a Striped Parrotfish going on about 2 years. Still looking for that small Quoyi. Actually found one on DD about a month ago and they shipped me two flame hawkfish instead (don't get me started). Now I will say my tank is 430 gallons with lots of stuff for parrotfish to graze on all day long. If your tank is a clean SPS tank, these fish are not a good fit.

Have one coming in Thursday. Wondering how you QT them? I have Chloroquine Phosphate, but would need to buy the stuff to treat with copper.

All of my fish go through Tank Transfer Method along with treating with prazipro for internal parasites. I believe this is especially important for parrotfish. I have not used copper in the past, I just don't like the toxicity of it. Quoyi parrotfish will eat any and everything once acclimated. If I remember correctly, I used algae wafers as a starter food, then frozen, then pellets. Good luck. They graze all day long.

I would not recommend quoyi parrotfish as an aquarium fish. I agree with you.

We will have to agree to disagree. Last one I had for three years lost to my stupidity in QT tank when my DT had to go fallow. I have had a striped parrotfish going past 5 years. Mine eat nori, frozen and pellets and graze on the rocks all day long. Maybe the size of the tank makes a difference. My tank just under 450 gallons. I have no experience with these fish in smaller tanks, so that may be where the problems crop up.

5 Years? Very Impressive.
