Brother, here is my two cents. It is certainly not the word of God but is a good start. First and Foremost, alk can be ran low (6-7dKH) or very high (14dKH). The Holy Trinity is Alkalinity, Calcium and Magnesium. Not limited to but these are the three primary things you have to get a balance with. Alkalinity stability is key. Alkalinity is the most important parameter to keep stable as opposed to the other two. Calcium is good approximately 350-450ppm. Magnesium is usually good 1250-1500ppm. The main thing you have to realize is, NEVER chase parameters. If it is within your desired range, LEAVE IT ALONE. Just try to keep your tank stable and stick with a regular schedule and everything will flourish for you over time.
