Radiation hits Hawaii from Japan.

So how will it effect us. The radiation is in the water so it will probably kill some reef. What is everyone's opinion of it.

Ahh man i hope not I was stationed on Oahu for 5 years some of the best diving and snorkeling I have ever done and the fish are awesome. There is a huge market for both aquarium and food source fish out there especially big eye tuna. either way it is not going to be good for a lot of companies and businesses alike and last but not least the reef its self. Glad I was able to see it before this happens.

Yeah I would loved to have dived there but the news says it has already hit so I want be eating if fish for awhile. This is not good for anyone. That say it will effect California by 2014 so I think this is going to have a real impact on us as hobbyist.

Not only how will it affect the waters and it's inhabits but for how long? Is there even anything anyone can do for radiation in the water? If not we might get stuck purshasing 3 eyed 2 legged fish

I think we need some more information before postulating about the potential risks. Do you have a source for the concentrations that are being actively measured or the dose to reef animals or people? We are all exposed to radiation every day so without knowing the dose you can't really make any educated guess about the additional risk that it may or may not pose.

If I remember my oceanography class correctly the rotation of the Earth causes the ocean currents in the northern hemisphere to rotate in a clock wise direction (Coriolis effect). This would suggest that sea water contaminated with radiation in Japan would travel north and east to Alaska and then western Canada and possibly back across the ocean to Hawaii. I don't know if that's really how it works or not but maybe someone else familiar with ocean currents can chime in. I am still eating crab from Alaska so it must not be that hot, at least lets hope not! Not a radiation expert, just my 2c.

I don't know where you got your info from, but the radiation definitely hasn't hit Hawaii. The rubbish line hasn't hit either. I don't think the rubbish is even radioactive. The rubbish was swept out with the tsunami probably before it could be hit by the radiation.

It was on my homepage news but you are probably right. If you do a google search you can find all kinds of stuff on it. I'm not saying it is true just sying it could be possible. I really don't know much about that kind of stuff so if you say it did then I'm good with your info. I was just trying to make people aware and see if anyone had a opinion. Mission complete. Lol

We have been getting rubbish from Japan for decades. There is a beach on the south side of the big island that is covered in rubbish from Japan and is about a mile long. The whole shoreline. Layers of rubbish. Neat but sad.

There is a lot of research and articles about it, but who to listen to? When it happened, I was more worried about radiation in the air than irradiated material. Like was mentioned, i don't think there was much irradiated material that got away. They claimed a significant level of radiation will not make it to Hawaii. I think most people were more worried about the NW because of the jet stream. I was worried about the bering sea. But...I'm not a scientist and I didn't stay at a holiday inn express last night.

I'd probably be more worried about the nuclear bombs they detonated 50 years ago in the Marshall islands having an affect on reefs. I read about it once, but I don't remember off the top of my head the exact effects on sea life. Well, other than what was in the blast zone, I know what happened to it.

Just an FYI, we have been getting hit from radiation via the jet stream from the Japan tsunami since about a week after it happened. I have seen many videos from places like Michigan that shows when it rains the water is radioactive. It is higher than normal, but still well within "safe" levels from what I have read. Don't let the narrative in the videos scare you, some of them can be quite over the top full of "doom and gloom" if you watch enough of them.

From what I've read it is already here. I too have read about elevated radioactive levels in rain. But since everything has a political side to it I'm not sure who to believe. I do know this, the reefs where they tested the A Bomb 50 years ago are amazing. All back and because people have stayed away they are magnificent. There was a show on Natgeo that went diving there. I was shocked.
