Hi there,
Hubby and I are moving into a new house, that has radient flooring. (Heated water running under the floors to warm the house, rather than a furnace). It is what it is, and can't be changed. However, we have had our fresh water, and salt water fish tanks for 13 years.
How on Earth are we going to have them on heated floors? The sumps will obviously be very close to the floor. Even raised up a bit with a special stand...even with good airflow underneath...won't they heat up?
Does anyone know anything that can go under the stand to prevent heat from affecting them too much?

55 gal sump under fresh-water, and 40 gal sump under salt...though we were planning to upgrade the salt to around 200 gals total when we moved. (I think it's 110gal now including sump.)

I realize we may need a chiller, regardless, but when it's snowing outside, that floor is our only heat...if we can block it from directly under the tanks, the ambient heated room will keep them well, but I want no overheating.

Anyone have or heard of this issue? Thank you! Suggestions welcome!

I think your on the right track with elevating the sumps from the floor...shouldn' heat up too much without direct contact.

Also keep in mind that the floors aren't like a cast iron radiator. They are only gently warmed and their large surface area keeps the air warm.

Good point, good point! I am just not familiar with but, and these are long established tanks.
I think raised would work. Just really didn't want a situation where it seems fine, but the heat finds a way to quickly build up or cause strange issues. You get it.

No one else has actually had tanks on heated floors?

A simple clip on style fan run inside the stand to circulate air over the sump should help compensate for any minute heating from below. I concur with the above statements that the floor heat won't make that big a difference in the overall system so long as you aren't keeping the room/house over 80 degrees.
