I have a 36x24x24 mixed reef, and I'm considering upgrading my lighting to Radion G4 Pros.

Should I get two XR30's or three XR15's?

Personally I would do the two XR30's.
I have 5 G3 pros running front to back

on my 8' SPS tank. Very minimal, if any, shadowing. I know the new lenses on the G4's mean better spread generally speaking.
Depending on what you plan on keeping a pair of the XR30's will allow you unlimited options.

That's what I was thinking, bit wasn't sure if it was worth an extra $400.

I'll go with the two xr30's.

Thanks!

I have two G3 XR15 Pros over a 36 x 24 x 18 tank, and it's more than enough light for mixed SPS including Acros (I run them less than 40% max). You might have to run the G4s at a bit higher intensity, but they are supposed to have more even spread. I bet 2 XR15s would be plenty.

That's good to know. I really need to think about this. I have an Apex, so would I need a Reeflink?

Stick with the apex...seen too many complaints about the reeflink.

I think 3 XR15 might allow you to play with positions and adjust them depending on your scape.

Yeah, now I'm leaning more towards three xr15's, and I'll save $400. I could always add another xr15 if i needed to.

Yeah, the G4 Pros. I'd never noticed before that fusion only shows one white channel.

did you account for the mounting costs?
I'd be using a track and hanging kit, so I'd need to buy three slides instead of two. So the only difference in mounting is $20. I keep going back and forth between 3 xr15 or 2 xr30. And between reeflink and wxm.

The more I read about getting a Reeflink or WXM, the more confused I get. [emoji38]

I still think three XR15s over a 36 x 24 tank might be overkill... I spent a lot of time talking with Patrick and the other folks in their booth at the last MACNA and Reefstock shows because I was thinking about upgrading the G3's over my 36 x 24 tank and was wondering how the G4 intensity/coverage would compare. Especially since you're using the track and hanging kit, maybe think about buying two to see how things look - you can always easily add a third later.

I would do the same, get 2 first and see how it is. I don't think you'll need 3 immediately.

I have an XR30Gen2 over a 40 breeder QT and it isn't wide enough to cover the entire width, but I keep about 6" sectioned off so that my equipment is out of the way. I think that a pair of 15's spaced with the pucks about 3-4" further apart than the pucks on a -30 would get you good coverage now, then maybe add in the third when/if growth starts causing shadowing.

One plus is that the fans on the 15's shut down.

I've read that you can't contol all of the whites on an Apex.

The WXM couldn't control all of the channels when the G4Pro came out, but they released a firmware update a month or so later that corrected the issue.
