Just read Mike Palletta's article here about some of the 'masters' tanks. One thing that I found really interesting is that Sanjay runs his G4's at 100% at about 10" off his tank. Moreover, he runs them that high for more than 8 hours per day. Not sure I've seen anyone running their G4's that high (or even close for that matter). Anyone else here running them such high intensity?

The lf near me runs their g3's at 100%, way to scary for me

Sanjay's tank is deep, (500 gallons) explains running them that high.

I have 5 G3 pros over my standard dims 240 and am at 85% currently 12" off the water surface. Using the "acclamation mode" on Reeflink on my way to 100%. Corals LOVE it.
As long as you ramp up slowly, I see no reason not to run them at a high intensity.
Another local reefer said to me, "no led will ever be brighter than the sun"
I think he has a valid point.

Interesting side note, I switched from Halide to the Radions. Since switching, the corals closest to the surface have changed their growth patterns from long and lanky to much thicker and bushier.

True about his depth. Didn't think of that.

That's interesting. LED doubters always claim that corals grow more leggy under LED's as compared to MH.

I thought it interesting too. I also noted a color shift, definitely for the better, in many of my corals too. I can only surmise that the LED's are consistent spectrum wise compared to Halide which have a definite color shift with time/age of the bulb.

It's really not all that hard for us to deliver more daily light energy to the coral than they get from the sun as detailed in the below article, and that is at very shallow depths even.

However remember that coral dissipate extra light energy via heat, and a high rate of flow is important in tanks running a lot of light. For instance I have 2 radion G3 over a 24" cube and I run them at 75%!! That's around 600 par on some acros. However that tank has a constant flow of at least 100x turn over and the flow on those acros is a couple inches per second. We don't talk about flow enough with light, but they are closely related in our tank.

Ime being leggy is 100% related to flow.
