alright so im planning on getting some radions towards the end of this month, and im having an issue my tank has a canopy on it which opens from the top... and not the front, I'd really love to keep the canopy on the tank but im not 100% sure its even an option at this point. the inside of the canopy sits about 8" away from my water, and with the radion on in there the lights will probably be about 6" from the water.... because the canopy opens from the top, i cant hang them inside of the canopy and the part of the canopy that opens takes up about 60% of the top half of the canopy so if i did hang the lights inside they wouldnt be in the middle of my tank they would be closer to the back, is that an issue?? i was thinking maybe i could do some form of DIY railing system to slide them back and forth so i dont have to mount it onto the portion that opens and just push them backwards when its feeding time. other than that i think my only other option would be to remove the top portion of my canopy entirely and hang them from my ceiling. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY HELPFUL. IMG_0469.jpg

I probably wouldn't hang them inside a closed canopy like that one.
IMO they would be a little too close to the water.
I've seen people mount Radions on top of canopies, and cutting a hole to let the light shine through.

I wouldn't have it that close to the water, that's going to be a bit too strong. The arms are nice if you can get away with it

I ended up cutting holes that were 1/4" smaller on every side. Since your entire lid opens you'd need to figure out some type of strap to hold them down. Luckily with my canopy there was enough room so that when the lid opens the lights aren't affected.

how far away would you suggest 12"? also i cant use the arms i dont believe, my tank has a lip on it that is about... 1 1'2"

I think they can work with lips, I'd call them and ask. I'd say anything over 8 inches from the actual pucks to the water

Anywhere from 8" to 10". I see some going as high as 12, but I think they were going with more height to get more spread.
I think at anymore than 10" you would be getting a lot of glare when looking in the direction of the tank.
I don't could be wrong, but that's just my thoughts.

I'm also looking at the ap700 they have an actually canopy mounting system. Would that be ill advised to have 6-7" from the water as well?

I don't know what that light is. I only know about what I've learned from using Radions.

But, it would depend on how ventilated that light needs to be.

It's the kessil ap700 it's their newest light fixture atm. Brs did a pretty decent review on it vs the radion xr30 in week 22 and 23 I believe of their 160gallon setup
