Hello I’m planning to build a 57g cube reef tank in a few weeks and am planning on equipment stock. I really like the controllability and over all performance of the Ecotech Radion G4 Pro series everyone has claimed it to be. Im planning on a single Xr15 G4 Pro to light the 24”x24”x24” tank. Is the wide lens and diffuser nessessary and could it help?

What types of coral are you going to be keeping?

Ah I forgot to mention sorry bout that. I plan on keeping a mixed reef with coral ranging from Dendrophylia, zoas, Euphylia, chalices, montis, and Acropora. I also plan on either a Maxima clam or crocea clam right under the lights, top of rock work but they need so much light I don’t think the Radion can handle their needs.

If you're going to be keeping a few sps i'd opt for two, or look at the xr30 which has a recommended spread of your 24x24, the recommended spread for one rx15 is 18x18, and unless the sps are kept in the middle near the middle to top you may have issues on the sides.

The aquascape would be a series of pillars that branch out to the top of the tank. The SPS and possibly the clam would be in the middle top of the scape while the lower light coral would be near middle of the tank. NPS would be on the side somewhere. Sorry I don’t have pictures of the aquascape because I don’t have the rocks yet. I will post a pic once the rocks arrive est March/5. I need to do more reseach on the wide lense upgrade and the diffuser.

I don't think the wide angle lens is needed to give you adequate spread for the 24" tank.

The diffuser isn't necessary in my opinion but can help with some things, such as reducing the disco ball shimmer from the radions. The loss of par, though, would be an issue if you try to squeeze by with just the one xr15 unit.

Trying to get by with just the 1 XR15 pro unit for your size tank and desired stocking list is kind of iffy and pushing it. If you truly selectively placed your higher light needing corals (i.e. no more than 12" deep), you might be able to get by. I'm not sure about the clam, though.

Check out BRS par readings at around 3 minute mark, which is based on one XR15pro at AB+ program setting.

Thank you for your thoughts on this subject and the additional link to two really helpful videos! I think I’m pretty impressed on the dramatic increase in performance of a single Xr15 with the diffuser. I’m now set on a single Xr15 with a diffuser since during the beginning of the tank build I will only buy lower light demanding corals and as the years go on I might just add a second Xr15. All I need now is to borrow a PAR meter and slowly acclimate new coral to slowly up the rockwork to meet its ideal lighting preference.
