Looking for some advice on my new Anemone. I got him from the LFS. Brought him home and dipped him and placed him in my 5g QT tank. He’s been in there for 3 days and he keeps closing up. He’s moved around the glass and is now hiding under the HOB filter. I’m using water out of my DT that is just over a year old. Basic water chem is good (salinity, ammonia, nitrate and nitrite). Tank is at 77 degrees. I’ve never had one so maybe this is normal but I wanted some input from you guys. These photos are from the last 6 hrs. Have the time he’s open, the other half the times he’s closed. Thank in advance!

When does he close? Is there a trend when he closes? Or a certain time of day maybe?

It does seem like he closes up and the end of the day when the light ramps down.
It could be he knows the light schedule and is preparing for sleep? Or the lights are too strong, or the lights are running too long. Any insight on how long ur lights are on? And how intense they are? Might be the lights, not totally sure.

The QT tank has one Kessil 360 on it and it’s on day 3 of a ramp up. When the ramp up is complete it will be at 50%. It’s currently at about 30% of the 50%. So maybe about 15-18%. Hope this makes sense.

It could be a lighting thing, but the biggest thing I see is the Ammonia Alert badge shows that there is Ammonia in the water. That nem will NOT tolerate ANY ammonia. Do some water changes to keep the water at ZERO ammonia. I would also add a rock or two for it. BTA's are rock dwellers and will appreciate a rock to hide in, on, and under at times.

I did a 50% change earlier today. That vile in the photo is the results right before the picture was taken. The badge takes a little to come down. I don’t know where the ammonia is coming from and how it went up in just 3 days. I think that might be the problem. I’m going to investigate. Know I’m wonder what my DT is. I stopped checking it about 6 months ago.

DT doesn’t have any ammonia. I don’t know why I have it in this little 5g. I only have about 4 gallons in it. It’s has coral, 1 anemone and 1 shrimp. I even put a squirt of turbostart in it.

Could it be the nem has expelled a bit of goo that caused the ammonia?
Maybe toss in some rock from your display to process any ammonia...
I'd change a few gallons using DT water as well, assuming salinity matches.

This is this morning.

Nems produce waste, waste = ammonia. Looks healthy, just not all that happy?

you said dip. Did you mean dip like a coral dip, or rinse?

I have 2 rainbows - they close up every night and open up when there’s light in the room before the actual lights come on.

That seems to be what he is doing too. I just dipped him in Revive several times.

Agree with placing some rock in tank for it to attach on. How long will you wait to put in main tank?
