Anyone else notice how many rainbow sps are being sold now? Or is it just me :D

I always thought a rainbow was at least 4-5 colors but I am seeing tons of 2 colored rainbow acro's these days.

Are there any true rainbow sps? What now defines a rainbow sps?

Yea tricolors have three dominate colors, rainbows have more. And dark green and light green are not two different colors imo. Unless photographed the right way and sold as rainbows :)
In my experience the true color a coral will be often comes much later after its been in a tank for months. A lot of corals you can predict what color they will be. But the unknown ones that come in brown I have seen turn to stunners more times than not. The rainbows tend to brown and loose color when stressed much easier than average corals ime as well. The ones vendors sell as rainbows often turn to one or two colors.
I would like to hear others experiences.
I saw a tank online where the owner had a number of reefcrest corals like humilus and monticulosa that were all bold tricolors. Very hard to find pieces and I wish I knew where I saw it, I think about them often.

Following!

To throw more gas in the flame how about a rainbow under normal lighting conditions :D Back in the day we had MH lighting or PC, that was it, then it was T5 and actinic lighting, then led Blue. Point being you can pull more colors now vs then. Now i see another layer which is sickening imo in which you use an orange gel filter. Then we take pics.......

I want to know if we have any true rainbow sps out there with daylight. I'm sure there are a few.

Those cameras with macro lenses sure pick up colors that the eyes don't see.

I'm with you, people slap on the "rainbow" label to get a few more bucks out of the deal.

It depends on how people interpret the word rainbow. A lot of acro name end in rainbow now aday to boost their price tag. I dont blame those with at least 5 colors but for the most part, any acro with two colors people will identify it as rainbow

IMHO there are a few SPS that qualify as rainbows. The JF Homewrecker for example (oddly enough does NOT have "rainbow" in the name). I've seen it in person and the pics he has are spot on for color (I know they LOOK impossible, but seeing it in person, there's no denying that his pics are accurate).

I am curious as to what you mean by "daylight" since that seems to mean different things to different people. For example, at peak my tank is running at 18.5k spectrum. Some MH bulbs run at 20k. Is that "daylight"? The more white/yellow you have in a spectrum, the more "drab" corals will look (IME at least). So if you're running your tank at 10k, I'm not sure rainbows will be visible in much of anything even if they're present.

Give your coral a fancy name, and do some creative photo editing, and you can charge whatever you want. That seems to be the business model.

Heres a true rainbow, as in different fluorescent colors. Photo from reef raft canada
