I dose BRS part 2 but only been doing calc and alk. I switched salt from RC to Res Sea non pro.

My mag is starting to drop. It’s now 1270. What’s the best range for mag?

Should I add it to my doser? Or just does when needed?

How do I raise my mag with the BRS part 2. I have a full gallon made already. Can I dose it all at once or do I have to raise small amounts like calc and alk?

I like to keep my mag in the 1350ppm to 1500ppm range. There is some anecdotal evidence that higher mags helps keep some nuisance algae/bacteria from thriving.
My experience is that mag is very forgiving. I would raise it over 3 or 4 adds. Not because I would worry about doing it too fast, but to make sure you have a chance to test and make sure you calculated correctly.

Thanks for the info. Should I set my MAG on a doser pump or just test every 2 weeks and dose?

I dose mine automatically to keep it stable but if consumption isn't too high you could do it weekly. Not sure I would go every 2 weeks unless demand is very low.

FYI, I use about 1/3 as much Mag as I do Alk and Calc using the BRS products.

So if I dose 36 ml per day for my alk and cal then maybe 10-12 mag per day could keep it stable?

My understanding is that different corals have a wide variety of magnesium demand. While they all seem to take Alk and Calk up fairly evenly, some may use around 5 times more Mg than others. You'll need to figure out what works for your tank and the corals specific to your system. It has taken a lot of testing and adjustment to get mine steady. Fortunately, Mg not being stable isn't as important as Alk and Calc.

That’s understanding. I’ll see what I can do over the next few weeks and I’ll dose slow :)

Thanks

That’s much different than what I have led to belive. May I ask where that is from?

I started questioning it because of this.

I'll have to see if I can find the discussion in a thread that it lead to.

Edit: It's all worth a read, but this is probably the most relevant quote.
"Further complicating the lives of aquarists is the fact that different organisms use different amounts of magnesium relative to calcium (Table 1, where the organisms are seen to range from 0.05% to 4.4% magnesium by weight in the skeleton). Consequently, the optimal amount of magnesium to provide to an aquarium, relative to calcium input, is going to depend on exactly what organisms are in the aquarium. For this reason, one may find that simple use of any particular calcium and alkalinity supplementation scheme may lead to magnesium declining (or rising) over time. These issues will be addressed more extensively in future articles."

Cool. Thanks

It says 677ml . Seems excessive but the Calculator makes sense easy to use . I can do this over a few days but do you think that’s around normal milliliters to dose ?

Yup, it is reasonable. It takes a lot of mag solution to get it to come up relative to calcium.

I only added 200mil and tested next day. It went up to 1360. So ether I tested wrong the first time, or the calculator is wrong, or i made the solution wrong lol.. Glad I did not get all 600mil..
