Raising salinity formula?

Have about 70 gallons of water in my 90 gallon. I need to raise the salinity up. It's at about 1.0245 and I want it at 1.026. If I were to add a gallon of water, what salinity is needed in the gallon?
 
make that single gallon 1.026 - same as your goal

you want to raise slow ... some will say I am too slow... but I'd take a week or longer to raise

No. My salinity is a little lower than I like. Currently getting chemiclean out of my system so my skimmer is pulling a bunch of water out. Was going to replace and get to where I want it to be.

That would take a very long time. Like months.
 
I don't plan on doing it all at once. I just need a reference point.
 
Just change your ATO from RO/DI water to mixed saltwater and make sure the saltwater mix is at the level you want it to be. Added step...increase your evaporation by removing any canopy/lid/glass, and agitate your water's surface more.

1.026 + the amount required to raise 70 g from 1.0245 to 1.026
1.026 + 70 x 0.0015 = 1.131

LOL ... then I wouldn't change just a gallon ;) Next water change I'd mix heavy above and keep doing water changes that way until I reached goal.

I'd be (who am I kidding...I am) curious to know how you got this math.

Also, I'd caution even doing this. THAT much salinity in water added to a tank is going to shock and kill a lot of life. Keep in mind, the higher salinity water doesn't just magically blend in perfectly with all areas of the tank right away.

Didn't plan on just dumping it in. However as top off water it won't make the impact that would be dangerous
 
I was exactly in your situation a few months ago. Always kept my salinity at 1.024 and noticed my calcium and alk levels were not desirable so I decided to raise it. It’s easier than you think. What I did was make a bucket of saltwater at 1.026 and eventually it got up to 1.026. It took 2 months or so but it’s better than crashing your tank by mixing a bucket of 1.03+ or something super high to change it. Good luck

Jekyls question was hypothetical gallon.
I agree doing this in a gallon to a stocked tank is not a good idea.

Here's the problem with that... If you're not constantly checking your salinity, you run the risk of raising it over your target mark, if you make your ATO water higher than 1.026. I know the risk is low, but it's still there.

Any salt in ato will raise salinity since you are replacing evaporated water which has no salt.
But you are correct in that the higher the ato salinity, the more often you'd have to check.

If I know the exact amount needed for 1 gallon of water to get my salinity where desired, I can then dilute it. I can use that 1 gallon in 20 gallons of top off water to get the desired effect.

No, that is a different question, if you are replacing evaporated water
1 + (70 × 0.0015)/20 = 1.00525 if used in ato, and 70 g tank

If added to 70 g in 90g tank then 0.00525 + 1.026 = 1.03125
 
Check the BRS web site. They are putting a lot of Marine Depots calculators up on their site, they may have something.
