Gang I need help figuring this out. The temp on my tank started to rise yesterday and I can’t figure out why.
45 gal
Temp controlled by a Jr apex
On off set for 78 to 78.5
Temp in my house constant at 71(Ohio) so its cold outside now
No new equipment
Run AI primes on schedule
Fluval Hester currently unplugged
My skimmer and return pump are both cool to the touch
Just did a 20% tank change last week
2 sicce circulation jets, no issues

I started getting alerted yesterday my temp was over 78.5. It made to to 80.5 I turned my lights off, unplugged the heater just in case it was on but looked off and got busy cooling the water. Took at 5 gallons cooled it to 70 put it back in the tank and that brought the temp down to 79.9. I put a fan next to the tank and overnight brought the temp down to 77.9. I plugged the heater in to the apex to ensure it turned on like it was supposed and it was actually on. All good. The temp raised to 78.5 and the heater turned off, as it should. The temp remained stable somewhere in the 78.7 to 78.8 range. However at 11am the temp became to rise. I was at church and assumed it was rising because the light were ramping up. The lights are scheduled to start to ramp at 10:30am. So I immediately thought the lights were the culprit. Much to my surprise when I got home my lights were not on. I forgot I turned them off yesterday and never went back into the dashboard and turned the schedule back on.

I know this isn’t a huge temp swing but in looking at my temp chart on my apex this has never happened before and I can’t figure out why it is spiking.
As I type the temp is still slighting rising it at 79.5 and the lights are on but the heater is unplugged. I’m getting ready to turn the fan back on.
Any suggestions on what could be causing this would be appreciated. No new equipment on the tank and nothing has changed in my house that could have triggered this to my knowledge. I’ve never had to cool the tank before, no even in the summer.

The only culprit possibilities at this point are the pumps. Turn them off one at a time and monitor for a day or so. Once you find the one that no longer raises the temp you have your answer. Naturally, do only the sicce's and the skimmer pump, if these don't affect a change then the return pump is the most likely suspect. Good luck and keep us posted.
PS- make certain that your power bricks are not in contact with the sump or the DT...

Recheck the temperature with a second piece of equipment. It could easily be an error with the probe.

Thank you both for the feedback. It was the Apex probe! I did have a 2nd thermometer in the DT and when I looked at it yesterday I thought that can’t be right. Lol. Guess it was. I just now put another digital thermometer in the DT and it is reading 70.7 however the apex probe is reading 80.

I have no experience with an Apex, but regardless of what any digital read out says I always have a red line temp gauge in my tank as a reference to see if anything seems out of wack
