Ramping lights down

i have a question related to ramping down phase. i always thought that ramping down lets the coral extend and try to filter food. for me my corals they rather start to close and rather prepare for sleep instead. as this is my first tank and i have no comparison i need your expirience.

It really all depends on the coral. Many LPS will do what you describe, closeup when the sun sets. Others will only open up as part of a feeding response and ignore the light. Try feeding a little after lights out and use a red flashlight, you might get a surprise.
