random idea for aesthetically pleasing flow

Hey, has anyone just attached a small pump to glass lily inflow/outflow pipes? you could get decent flow without ugly and intrusive power-heads and cords. Is there any reason no one has done it?

I have seen it used a few times in low(er) flow reef tank. mostly maco algae style tanks or even sea horse tanks.

in general, it won't produce the right kind of flow that most corals are looking for.

As far as being aesthetically pleasing - a glass lily pipe will get that done well, at least for a while.

Eventually though, it will get buildup on it from film algae, followed by coralline algae - especially on the inside of the pipe where you can't get to it to scrape it off. The only option to keep it looking nice will be to clean in a few days, both inside and out.

Good point, coraline would be an issue. Maybe a modular pipe would be easier to scrub. Aqua Rio has a model that’s been getting some attention. You could probably even attach a random flow generator.

If it where modular you probably could keep it clean - but it if its clear, it would still be a chore.

Not familiar with the Aqua Rio, I did a quick search but didn't see anything - do you have a link?

They are called Neo Flow pipes. They’re made of clear pvc.
