Random stupid question of the day

If someone lived on or near the ocean, could they simply use that water for their tank rather than setting up a mixing station? Just a random thought that popped into my head since in theory that is the water we are trying to create. Not something I am thinking about doing as I live in the snowy north and far from any sea water. Just something I thought about as I was mixing up my weekly water change. How nice it would be just to walk outside, scoop out a couple of buckets and be done with it. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but sometimes my brain thinks of some pretty random stuff. Lol

Not a stupid question many people do it however you need to collect well away from areas of potential contamination so most collect their water well off shore.

Yes people do this, many LFS in Florida sell seawater. As Retro mentioned, if collecting yourself it's important to collect from a place free off contamination. That aussie youtuber who goes around with a large container in his pickup gets his water from the ocean, if only we lived on the gold coast

Definitely not a stupid question. I had wondered the same thing but thought I had seen that you shouldn't collect natural sea water due to contamination, but it seems if done correctly in a good area that this wouldn't be a problem. One main reason that I love this forum is to get this free, great advise from others who have more experience and knowledge than I have. That was a great question.

In my head I was just picturing someone walking out their back door to a dock and instant water change with no more trips to the LFS for buckets of salt or rodi filters. Some people day dream about money and some dream about their tanks. Lol
