Rapid lose of zoas

A few weeks ago my Zoa rock that is covered with Rasta just started to die. I lost over 100 in a few days and after a few water changes and I added fuel they stopped dying. All the levels where good nothing wrong but I did have a blanket of red algae grow on the sand bed

If they came back after adding fuel then you may be lacking trace elements. The algae is from the fuel, I dose fuel every Saturday followed by a water change on sunday. If over used (even in one dose) it will create a algae mess. Now if the algae was there while they were starting to close then that could be the cause, zoas hate algae bloom

Thank you that makes sense. I’ll skip a dose of fuel and I just added a (red fin lawnmower blenny) a few hours ago. I am hoping he will start to eating extra food and waste.

They where all low. Nothing that would raise an eyebrow

I have experienced this numerous times. It is hard to pin point exactly the reason why this hobby is always exciting never the same thing

I have had many reef tanks over the years. This has never happened

You never experienced a zoas melt away randomly?

more info about the tank would be helpful. They don't appear stressed in the photo. May want to check them at night and see if you catch any visitors.

I am thinking is was nitrites

I had a whole patch disappear overnight. After I lost about 80 zoas in 2 days I found out it was my fat pig hippo tang munching zoas in between meals.

tangs will eat zoas. Not often but it can happen.
