I have a 125g and Ive been using the RP3 for six months now. So for no complaints.

I'm thinking about setting up my 55 gallon with this filter, but I'm unsure how well it'd work in a reef set up, I'm still just starting out in saltwater lol

I have a 125g mixed reef and it works great. Skims great. I have the auto top off system(RP3 Plus) hooked up work great as well. I clean the filter every two weeks and the filter pads are filthy so I know its doing its job.

I removed the carbon bag that comes with the filter. I use a carbon pad under a blue bonded filter pad in the first tray. This gives me better water flow by removing the dense carbon bag.

There's a plastic ring/nut around the base of the skimmer cup. Loosen it and slide the collection cup up or down. If your skimate is wet slide the cup up about a quarter inch and see what you get. Make little adjustments daily until you get the results you want.
