Hi Everybody!

I picked this coral up from a "basement store", but can't figure out what it is exactly:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

? but nice coral

Thanks all... Indeed, it does resemble a capnella, I have two varieties of capnella next to it in that tank (not pictured) and they don't really look the same. First the growth density of the polyps on my other capnellas are different, second, the polyps points are up with the other capnellas, but with this one they curl back.

Interestingly enough, I traced this piece back a bit and it is Japanese and it was imported into Canada from the only source of Japanese corals I have ever found here (I have traced all my other Japanese corals to this single shop). I did find this exact piece on another forum listed as a Japanese Lemnalia (also from a Canadian), here is his photo:

However, I can't find any pictures of other Lemnalias that look the same, with the same growth patterns (let alone green).

So, Japanese Kenya Tree it may be. It doesn't seem unreasonable to have slightly different polyps in different oceans! If anyone is interested, I could rearrange the tank a bit to have all three in the same picture...

Capnella comes in a variety of types. Some with dense polyps, others with large widely spaces ones, some in clumps and tightly bunched. Some with few branches, others with many. There are varieties that drop branches and reproduce rapidly, and others that do not.

I am confident that the OP's specimen is not lemnalia. It has a very unique polyp that's generally very tiny, in clumps, and high on a densely branched body.

And as I've said before, according to experts, lemnalia smells like death warmed over.

OP: If you can get a good close up shot of the polyps I would have a much better chance at narrowing down the possibilities.

Thanks for your help!

Are the ones I posted here not close enough? If not, I can likely do better in a couple weeks when I have my camera gear handy, and not just using my phone.

Yes, much closer of the polyps than what you have. Maybe something like this:
