Been reefing for almost a year now (will be a year in April) and I'm really intrigued by rare/unique corals, especially uncommon LPS. I don't just mean rare acro or zoa morphs/strains, but rare completely unique corals. I have the following corals that I consider somewhat rare (or at least not seen in every tank): a dendrophyllia, a fox coral, a goniopora, and a pink-tipped elegance. Admittedly, these are all pretty common, but they're still somewhat harder to find. I've also been thinking about getting some of these:
  • Christmas tree worm rock
  • A scoly
  • A fungia
  • A cynarina
  • A photosynthetic gorgonian
Does anyone else have any ideas for rare/completely unique corals?

I also think a walking dendro (with a peanut worm) would be super cool as well.

Are there any rare stony corals? The Carribean stony corals are pretty cool but I believe they're all federally protected.

+1 dendro. Started 2 small heads now it has seven. 2 larger ones n 5 that are growing well

I just picked up a blue ridge coral, Heliopora, last week. It was a chance find at a new LFS.

Its a soft coral that draws iron from the water to make an aragonite skeleton. Its the only soft coral thats hard, and its the only coral in its family. And its Blue! Definately a rare and unique coral that I was happy to find.

Hobby-wise most any NPS corals are rarely seen in tanks

Pretty sure Nanipora also builds aragonite skeletons and is in the same family as Heliopora.
Also, Heliopora does not always have a blue skeleton. H. hiberniana has a white skeleton.

Putting in a vote for Stylocoeniella. If you're a fan of Psammacora or encrusting Porites there are some fantastic color morphs. I have a colony of "Electric Daisy" Stylocoeniella growing on my aquarium wall. Also, I feel that bubble corals (Plerogyra sinuosa) are hard to come by these days. They have a reputation for being sensitive, but from what I have seen they can be like a Phoenix and come back from almost nothing which is impressive. They also can sting, so I'm sure that's part of it.
