Anything I could have done to make this work? Feed wrasse before introducing? Or is it more or less the case that the wrasse was always going to eat the shrimp, it was only a matter of when...

Probably not. Part of the reason why they are so active is because they are always looking for food.

Mine will occasionally bash a star fish against a rock to have a tasty tentacle.

Mine lived with a cleaner shrimp for a few months before he decided to eat it.
