I bought a rasta frag about a month ago. I did dip it when I got it. At the same time I got the rasta I got a fire and ice frag.

The fire and ice has already multiplied and is doing well, but the rasta barely opens. Sometimes it will open for a bit but never like the fire and ice. I have a couple other Zoa and paly frags and they open as well.

Is there something different about the rasta? I had it on a bottom rock in direct light. Is this too much? I moved it yesterday to a shader spot. Can algae cause this? I have a small gha issue (the tank is 2 months old). The parameters are good and as I said everything else is thriving.

Hard to tell from the picture but if the GHA is growing on the plug and close. It can agitate them.

I would try dipping it again.

Rastas can grow in extreme light, medium light, high and low flow. What are you dipping them in? I don't see algae around the polyps so I don't think that's an issue.
Coral Rx. The GHA is around the frag but it is actually a new thing. They weren't opening before the GHA

I'll try dipping them again tomorrow morning so I can put them back in with the lights out.

How long ago did you dip? Personally I would try a new spot in the tank, opposite of the conditions there in. Meaning if there in high light and high flow try lower in the tank with less flow.

When I first got them about a month ago.

That's what I did, I put them in lower light.

dip them as per the coral rx bottle and then try to put them on the bottom of your tank on the sand bed - my zoa's love being on the sandbed

Have you noticed a thin layer of brown film on them? I just bought some Rastas that won’t open and they have this brown film. I did hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and coral rx dips. I also lightly brushed them with a kids paint brush. The brown film is gone but still haven’t opened. Hoping this stuff doesn’t spread to my others in the tank.

Mine had bryopsis and the GHA still remains all around it. I have mine up top and a good oxygenated flow off the top. Started with 4. In this past year now 90+. Took this pic 2 days ago. Used Reefroids never target fed and ATI 2 Blue+, Coral+, and True Actinic.

That's what I am looking for, lol. Looks great.

I'm going to try the dip again. I'm sure it isn't my parameters because if it was the other zoas would be affected too.

I have one question for you. Have you recently done anything to disrupt your good bacteria? I removed a HOB filter and swapped it out with a chaeto reactor. My Rastas and one other colony did not like that. I just added a bottle of Nite-Out ll to bring my good bacteria up to par and within 2 days they opened up like nothing ever happened.

Nope, nothing I can think of. This is not a new problem. They have never really acted like they should.

I just finished the dip and put them back in. I'll update the thread.

Best of luck with them. They truly are a beautiful coral. The True Actinic and Reefroids is what blew up my colony.

I can't do the true actinic, I have a RSM C-130 and I am running steve's LEDs.

Are reef roids better than Reef Chilli? If I look at the ingredients, reef chili has everything reef roids has and more. I wouldn't mind alternating foods if it will help.

Reef roids is very fine and I truly believe in there product. I always mix oyster feast with reef roids. I've tried all kinds of powdered foods like reef chili, coral vibrance, coral frenzy, gonipower, none have compared IME to reef roids.

how often do you feed reef roids ?
also ,,do you broadcast feed?
how many times a week ?
sorry for all the questions

Reefroids and Reefchili are the two most beneficial. Some foods actually have a negative impact if you can believe that. If you own corals. This is pretty much the bible for feeding them with lights and food in my opinion. At 5 minutes in is the most important part of the segment showing the Reefchili & Reefroids and those that have negative impact.
