Or at least tell me what I am looking at :)

After adding my fishy friends, I decided to start running the lights. I'd been wondering why I'd not gotten really any "uglies" at all... well, a week of running the lights stopped that. Kinda amazing how fast things happened.

Anyway, this is what it looks like now, I've adjusted the white balance to reflect what it looks like to the eye as best as possible.

As you can see I have... uh... brown something... growing. Mostly on the rock and rubble, but a bit on the sand as well. The sand in areas with a higher flow has less growth.

I've also noticed that the upper central area of rock seems to have less... and this is where my 2 emerald crabs are most often spotted, it seems to be their "home turf". I assume they are eating it, and keeping it comparatively clean.

I see the (teeny tiny) blue- and scarlet-legged hermits on the rest of the rock; either they are too small to make a noticeable difference, or they aren't eating it at all.
There are also a couple of Ceriths about, and 3 Nassarius which are keeping themselves to the sand, and occasionally the glass.

in a couple of pictures, you can see a profile of the sand... it seems to be forming some bubbles of some sort... could this be the Nassarius, since they are borrowers?

I am assuming this is all natural, and an expected part of the tank balancing out, so if y'all see something that is a big red flag, let me know!!

Should I add any more CUC at this point? 2 emerald crabs, 2 each crimson-legged and blue-legged hermits (both wee dinky), a couple of Cerith, and 3 Narsarrius, in a WB 70.3 (just under 50g display vol). The tochus snails I bought didn't make it, and went to the great snail graveyard in the sky (backyard),

More snails and critters to stir up the sand will help with the beautiful uglies you have. They will probably get worse before they get better.

How much are you feeding the fish? Cutting back will help if you can measure P04 and Nitrates, or adding more if you can't?

I'm giving them a half cube of frozen mysis every other day, a small amount of flakes every 3 days or so, and a shake of Reef Nutrition TDO (tiny) pellets in the evening. I was dropping a sinking algae pellet in once a week or so, when I was worried that the CUC didn't have enough to eat.

That sounds fairly heavy to me, but they all come out and play when I feed em!

leave it.. thats the easy part. up next comes the dark brown... then green. but then you start to get the purple stuff you want. Just finishing up the green and starting to get the purply myself. I have just let nature run its course.

Pretty much this. The (i assume) diatoms have mellowed out. The snails and/or crabs seem to mostly keep it under control. I have to clean the glass every 3 days, but the rocks and sand have stopped getting absolutely covered.

And now, I've started to see dark brown, mostly on the rocks, mostly on the top surfaces that get the most light.

The brown has settled in.
It seems fairly easy to vac off the sand, but every 2-3 days I need to clean the glass. The CUC seems to be holding ground with it, but only on their staked out areas (they seem to like the tops of a couple of flat rocks the most. I think my Ceriths got evicted and seated by my hermits (even tho I left them plenty of shells), and I have a Lawnmower Bleneey arriving tomorrow, to pitch in.

The brown seems to come off the rock with a light toothbrush. When the replacement tubing for my Fluval 207 comes in, I'll take a bit of time in small increments and brush it off, catching what I can with the vac, and letting the floss and canister filter clear the rest from the water column.

I'm looking forward to seeing some coraline.
