So I left my house Wednesday night with both my nems looking great. Fed the tank and took off. Returned home Friday and the one nem looks like it’s on the brink of death!

I have a 40 breeder. Changed about 8 gallons since that’s all I had on hand at the time. Checked parameters. Ammonia is 0, nitrate reading 0 on API test kit (not very accurate). Nitrite reading 0.

I tried feeding a little brine shrimp but it’s not moving. I’m not sure what to do or if there is anything to do

How long have you had the nem ?
How old is your tank ?
Feeding it isn’t a good idea when it’s stressed

Tank is about 9/10 months old. The first nem has been in there for about 3 months and is looking healthier than ever. This nem has been in for about a month and started out great until recently.

I’ll stop feeding the nem directly. It almost looks like one side is dying or dead, but the other side is trying to hang on. The clowns are a mess, going up to it, checking it out. Swimmming around it

I don't know for sure, and I hate to keep sounding like I'm bagging on the blue and purple pics everyone seems to keep posting w/ ID's or advice, but I just can not tell if that is cyano on sand or what.
I also don't know if BTA is subject to bacterial infections like some other nems, maybe, or it could be getting ready to split, hard to say for sure, especially since you have 2 and one seems fine.

Update...

Also I know the pics are blue and I hate it haha. I ordered a coral view lense yesterday so should have that soon to help with the pictures.

Mine tends to deflate randomly and then go back to normal sometimes.

Opening and closing is normal, especially at lights ramping up or down, or off, but if it's actually deflating and inflating randomly that is usually the telltale sign of bacterial infection in many nems, I'm just not sure how common that might be w/ BTA's.

It's odd OP's looks ok on one side, not on other, would lead me to believe something touched or stung one side or something, but BTA's are pretty resilient, they seem to recover many bad things easily, often resulting in a split.

Sometimes they might even begin to split w/ new param stress, sometimes recover after acclimating and maybe not follow through, which can make them look haggered until they've recovered.

If the nem is not deflating, mouth is closed, you dont have to worry about that.
Where did you get the nem? Online? Local fish store? How did it look before you got it?
One of my nem looks like your nem, because it was shipped badly, the tentacles got damages during transit.
If the nems still healthy feed him, see how he respond, but let him settle down first
Here is a pic of my nem, some tentacles are damaged badly
Left side in the pic, tentacle is about 1/8 inch long only, the other side about 2 inches.
