Nitrate =5ppm
Nitrite =4ppm

I have a bit of a situation here that I need help with. I had a 20gal AIO tank that I started in Jan/2018 which I kept running until July. The tank was torn down and modified because I wanted a slightly bigger tank plus a sump to bring my volume to 30 gallons total. I was anxious to get a RBTA at 7 months so i got one before I came up with the idea to get a bigger tank. So... after I got the anemone I realized that I would be putting it into a brand new tank when it was ready which I know is not advised.

Before I had the chance to upgrade my tank the rbt a was in my 7 month old tank for a few weeks and it never opened fully like it was at the LFS. For the weeks that is was in the tank it gradually decreased in size and closed up even more. It was eating the food that I fed it and would open up a little after feeding but I knew something was wrong as it gradually lost some of its vibrant florescent color.

Once I placed it in my new tank exactly two weeks ago it has been like it is in the pic below. It will still eat food when fed. I took it off of its original rock and placed it on the tank bottom to see if it was capable of moving on its own and when i woke up in the morning it had moved and attached itself to the rock in the picture.

Two nights ago I tested my water with API test kit and I had Nitrite @10ppm and Nitrate @40ppm which through water changes I have gotten down to what I listed above.

My question is could my anemone be dying and slowly increasing my nitrite and nitrates? Does it look like it is to the point that i should remove it from my tank? Thanks for any help

Possibly. I had a rbta I got in February and it did not like my new aquarium I had upgraded too so it graduallly began to die and I’m guessing it released toxins into the water because all my coral began to slowly die too. All parameter were right though, didn’t make any sense. I found it could’ve been an anemone nukage.

Mine shrunk up with ammonia spike, have you tested that?

I heard of that happening but the rest of my corals are doing great. I'm just not sure if I should give up on him yet.

Ammonia tested 0ppm (API) last week and I didn't notice any change on my Seachem ammonia alert badge either. This anemone has been in two separate tanks now and has steadily declined.

If you see it start falling apart try to take it out before it’s tentacles start flying everywhere and kill everything

" if in doubt, pull it out"...... Rule of thumb. It may or may not be a contributor to issue. Try feeding to see if it perks up. Will be a good indicator if it will have potential to fill and survive

When I place food on its mouth it closes up and eats the food but doesn't perk up anymore than it was before feeding. I've been manually topping off the water since I got the anemone and I'm starting to wonder if the salinity swing is irritating it?

Salinity sensitive they are. If you have a sump, introduce water into sump rather than tank

What kind of lighting is it under? Did it move closer to the light or farther away?
When I first got it the lighting that I had was an LED Micmol G3 MINI. I put it in the tank and during the night it moved to the back of the tank under a rock. I left it alone and the next morning it had moved back to the front of the tank in the spot that I had hoped it would. Then it closed up and decreased in size. it would never extend toward the light and even though I didn't think that lighting was an issue I upgraded to the Hydra 26hd. It just moved across the tank so not closer or farther from the light.

Rbta dead.....lesson learned.

Oh no - sorry to hear
