Hi,

Wanting to re-scape my tank. Any precautions/recommendations?

I'm not sure if I want to keep all the existing rock or add new rock (dry). So let's look at 2 options.

Option #1 - Keep existing rock just re-scape:
  • Can I take rock out and use a toothbrush to scrub/clean anything off?
  • Any cycle issues?

Option #2 - New dry rock:
  • Is this just a completely bad idea?
  • Am I going to start a new cycle?
  • Any harm to existing fish and coral?

thanks

Option 1
You will have less of a cycle and add live rock. I would suggest dipping in H2O2 and scrub. keep the rock moist with paper towel, new paper during glue up. there are several glue that one can use the set up very quick even with wet rock.

I would go with option 1 as well. Be careful lifting the rocks up so you don't stir up what's under them. I would do testing after to watch for any ammonia.

Are we talking food grade 35% H2O2? Will using H2O2 kill off any/all existing beneficial bacteria on the old rock?

The brown bottle at the pharmacy 3%. The food grade would kill the beneficial bacteria for sure:)
