Re-plumbing a 14 gal biocube

I have decided to upgrade my pump. With this i want to split the flow. To do this i need to install a bulkhead. Has anyone ever drilled the plastic back wall of a biocbe while the tank is up and running? If so, what was your process and experiences?

Is it plastic I had the old biocube so I think my one was glass

Yes it is plastic. I'm not concerned with the drilling. But mire the keeping shrapnel out of the water.
