hi all,
im looking to upgrade my tank to a 250l (200 display) but i was wondering is it worth having a reactor, and if so do i get a calcium or media reactor, and in simple terms what do they do, because from what i understand a calcium one is pretty much like a calcium doser?
thank you

IMO neither. Are you planning on having huge amounts of sps coral?

no mainly zoas and lps only a few sps
Dose Kalkwasser if your needs get to the point where water changes can keep up. I’ve had a few reactors. Never a calcium reactor. Ended pulling them out. No reactor no filter roller. Run my skimmer 1 or 2 nights in a whole month. And grew this. All my sump does at this point is hold a filter sock and frag areas.

A media reactor is always good to have on hand even if you don’t run it all the time. You don’t need a calcium reactor.

A reactor is just a container to hold solids in contact with your water to perform some funtion. For a media reactor usually the solid media is absorbing something from your tank water that you want to get rid of. A media reactor filled with activated carbon is great for clearing toxins and other impurities and can help keep your water very clear. Many people run them all the time, and most people at least have some carbon on hand in case of emergency. So if you are dead set on getting a reactor, carbon in a media reactor is probably the safest and most basic addition to your system.

Here is a good “how it works” diagram.

I highly reccomend this. Best thing I have done to my personal reef tank was set up a kalkwasser dripper ( later turned it into a kalk stirrer) but have not had a single regret. If you are not going to be doing a ton of sps there really should not be a reason for a reactor and the kalkwasser should hugely benefit ph which in turn will help grow your corals faster
