Reactors with and without pump

Hi everyone. Another newbie question. How come reactors are sold with and without pumps? Under what scenario(s) would someone buy one without a pump?

Reactor pumps are not needed when using a manifold from the sump return pump. I have three BRS reactors feed from my manifold. Return pump must be strong.

As BigHildy stated, you can run them off of an existing return. Both of my reactors are run that way.

Thank you both. Does the reactor have to be in the same chamber as the return pump or can it reside in the chamber that the skimmer is located?

Depending on the type of reactor, it does not have to be in the sump at all. I use BRS reactors and they are not in the sump.

Mine are not kept in the sump either.......but to answer your question, you can put them anywhere they will fit.
