So, my tank has been up and running about 6mths. It is a 75 gallon with 20G sump. Have so/so T5 lights on it right now, but just ordered 2- hydra 52s. My water parameters have been pretty stable. Ph 8.1-8.2, Alk 11, SG 1.025, Nitrate 5-10, phos 0-0.02. the only issue I have had is with Calcium which was 350, then started daily dosing, so now up to 375. I have been having good luck with my softies and LPS which look happy and healthy (The pics I posted aren't the best, was just after a power outage). I am thinking of trying SPS, so I wanted advice as to whether my tank is ready for SPS yet and if so, which should I start with?

Calcium issue check your Mg

I would get your calc up and check your mag and keep things up and stable awhile before trying...

I also agree with bringing the Ca up and check the Mg. But with sps you will need to be checking your levels and adjusting accordingly.

Easy sps to start would include montipora and millipora.

Go for it.

I would get your hydra's in place and see how your current corals respond before adding SPS corals to your tank.

I you feel you want to start adding sps start with a small birds nest or something from the digi family if you are just starting out. See how those respond before you start adding acros to the tank...

Agree about Ca and Mg stability. And then start with a "beginner SPS"... something from a friend or club member that has been grown successfully in a captive system already is a great bet!

No colonies!!!!!!

Thanks all!! I'll wait a little bit until my Ca and Mg improve. I am planning with starting with some montipora. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm a big fan of starting with red planet acro! One of my favorites and easy to keep as long as your parameters aren't fluctuating off the charts
