Has anyone ever used the ready Set Tile that the sell in the home improvement stores?

It is a sheet of 2"x2" tiles properly spaced for grouting and they are held together with a couple of dabs of glue on each joint.

Is that glue toxic?

I would like to use them as frag stones.
Keep 4 or 9 of them together to form a square and put the frag you want to grow out in the center.

My wife worked for Olean American Tile in the 70's, but the dabs they use today are much different than back then.

Just an idea.......

I only grow Zoanthids and Polys

Here is the idea with frag stones....

If you are not sure about the glue holding it together then just take them apart remove the glue and put some super glue between them to hold them together. You could easily break them apart when the time comes.

True, could just glue the square frag stones too, was just looking for an easy fix. :xd:.... You know..... be lazy

I've been a tile installer for over 15 years and have honestly never been asked that. I made myself a note to ask our local distributor if they know. But of course wont be able to talk to them til Monday morning. Do you know the brand of of the 2x2's you plan to use?

Dal-Tile <--- Previously American Olean Tile where my wife worked.

My Mother-In-Law retired from there and she is trying to find out if it is just plastic or a glue that could dissolve.

I use a lot of AO tile. Shouldn't be too hard to find out what type of glue/plastic they are using. I'll post info on what I find out.

We have a guy in our local club who uses them. He said he just removes the glue from the back of them.

I hear ya. I'm the same way, always looking for a way to eliminate a step...

I am in the process of using some in a build in my basement and that stuff looks like the hot glue they use in glue sticks. I looked at the entry under Wickipedia and there are tons of possible bases and additives that vary depending on the use. Some additives like the biocides would make me a little nervous.

I have been using tiles from Lowe's for several years successfully. Get the ceramic tiles that come on a sheet with a diamond pattern kraft type paper backing and a gauze on top of that. Tear the gauze off and put them in a pot of boiling water. This softens up the glue and the paper will come off. Stir them a lot so they scrub on each other. Pour the water off, rinse, and boil them again. Do that as many times as you need until the water no longer turns yellow from the glue. I don't think the glue would hurt anything except probably fuel an algae growth.

I use the 1 x 1 size but they have 2 x 2 and a few other sizes. I can get 144 frag plugs for about $7. Glue your frag on the back (rough) side. The slick side won't hold very well.

Thanks H@rry!!!

Was hoping to keep them glued, but I don't think that is going to be an option.

I am going to contact some family friends that still work in the tile plant to see if I can get them lose (pre-readi-set)

Never messed with the glue stuff use left over tile. Mostly 12" tile and cut to size usually 1" and 2" but i have a few 3, 4, 6" squares and circles for my chalices A little more time consuming but i hate frag plugs and im just **** picky

I have also considered getting a tile saw for fraging large coral colonies. So i could just buy the 99 cent tiles at Home Depot and cut them up.
I have heard of others scaring them so that when they want to frag them, they break at the scare point.
