Really hope Neptune's Apex doesn't go this route

i just saw the new PMUP from apex on reefbuilders and it states that in order to use it you either have to have the 1link or the new apex controller. I hope they don't start making their new products to where you have to either have the 1link or the new controller.

I haven't seen any of the 1Link stuff in person yet, but 24VDC isn't proprietary or anything, you could just buy an adapter, but then you're right back to using up another socket on an energy bar.

I like the 1Link stuff, personally.

My concern is that if these new accessories can only be used through 1Link and it goes down, what do I do? No WAV no PMUP no COR no FMM. I'd like to be able to plug in essential gear independently of the 1Link into a regular power strip if my Apex goes down. Unfortunately it looks like Neptune's new accessories will be 1Link dependent. I really hope I'm wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

Just to be clear that I'm not bashing, just trying to be objective, I am an Apex Classic owner.

So get a 24VDC to AC adapter with a molex connector and plug it into a traditional power strip. There's absolutely nothing proprietary about 1Link, it's just an easy way to power stuff without taking up an outlet.

ETA: you'll have to do a little research on the pinout scheme, but I know I've seen it somewhere before, just can't find it right now for you. I'm sure smarter people than me could help you.

My problem one time is my wifi went down and I didn't know was wifi so I had to reset my apex wiped but got wifi working and it was fine also no I don't right now have other things on it but will in near future but I think a lot of power heads are ran thru wifi so that problem could exist for other fans I think I answered all question if not let me know but there only one wire and can use with other things so that's nice

They may well, they're offering molex to bare wire cables already to run other gizmos off of the 1Link.

I have a 1link for my wavs and think the system is awesome. There is complete control through apex, the pumps themselves are less expensive since they dont require a dedicated power adapter. All components complete controlled through apex. I also have an ecotech m1 with the reeflink. I need to buy a new pump within the next two months and would not hesitate to go with the neptune but i dont think it will be out in time.

Again, I run my Apex for monitoring, fail-safes and redundancy. It has done a great job thus far. However, if my Apex goes down, having everything soley dependent on 1Link scares the heck out of me. I could plug my MP10s and return pump and ATO into a regular outlet / powerstrip and it would run. I wouldn't have that option if I had to rely on soley 1Link dependant accessories. I think it would be more practical from a safety and backup standpoint if they made everything moving forward like the DOS, where you could go through 1Link OR through a regular plug (maybe not the best example because the DOS is useless if the APEX goes down. ).

Isn't the idea of the failback setting to decide what your outlets will do in the event your head unit crashes? If your 1Link Crashes it'd be the equivalent of a power supply dying, how would you have planned for that with a non-Neptune piece of gear? I'm assuming, and maybe I'm wrong but I sincerely doubt it, that you don't keep spare power supplies around for all your non-neptune gear.

How I have things set up currently, if my head unit crashes, fallback will keep things running that have their own power supply. If my EB8's fail, I plug my stuff into a regular power bar to keep my tank running. If my 1Link or EB832 fails, I now have no PMUP, no WAV, no DOS (if I toss it's separate power supply), maybe no COR or FFM if it's exclusively 1Link dependent and who knows what other toys Neptune makes 1Link dependant.

I guess my point is, if you go all in with 1Link dependent gear, where is your redundancy if they have no other means of being powered other than the 1Link?

That's why I run a WXM with Vortechs with battery backups and not WAVs... I definitely don't have to worry about Ecotech's service either.

Please don't take my comments the wrong way. I absolutely love my Apex and it's functionality and ease of programming. It's one of the best investments I've made in my reef. If new toys had at least an option of a separate traditional power supply, even for added cost, I'd feel much more at ease with going all in.

I share the same and that is why I am using vectra as I am in Asia where the support is bare, it takes a few weeks to get replaced
